Clearwater, FL – Premier Junior Tour held its 12th event of the 2011 season June 11-12, 2011 at the beautiful Countryside Country Club in Clearwater, FL. Play was conducted on all three of
Countryside’s nine hole courses. The course was in great shape, with the greens rolling fast and proving to be a challenge to the competitors. Warm weather conditions were present both days
despite the early morning starts, with temperatures climbing into the 90’s as the day went on.
Men 16-19
Playoffs were needed to determine both first and third places in the Men 16-19 Division over the weekend at Countryside. Lucas Trim of Tampa, FL and Dylan Strout of New Port Richey, FL co-led
after posting a pair of 75’s on day one. Seven other competitors were within four strokes of the leaders after day one, but the eventual Champion of the Division was not one of them. Andrew
Norris of Clearwater, FL found himself six back of the lead after on opening round of 81. Playing four groups behind the leaders, Andrew’s chance at winning the event was slim. However, with
many of the Round 1 leaders and chasers falling behind on Sunday, Andrew had an opportunity. And he seized it. Andrew fired an even par 72 on Sunday, giving himself a 153 total. Trim fell to a tie
for seventh after an 85 on day two. Many other of the leaders from Saturday were not able to keep it going on Sunday. Strout, however, did not give in. His 78 on day two gave him a total of 153 as
well. An on-course playoff was needed to determine first place. Andrew Norris and Dylan Strout went for two holes in the sudden death playoff, and Andrew was crowned Champion after winning
with a par on the second playoff hole. This is Andrew’s first victory on Premier this season. Andrew commented, “Yesterday (Saturday) was not my best day because I could not get the speed of the
greens down. However, today (Sunday) I played good, I hit 15 of 18 greens in regulation and 6 of 14 fairways and played a very steady round and was lucky enough to win in the playoff.” Andrew
was awarded with 1200 points for his victory. Colby Norris of Clearwater, FL and Colin Julian of Valrico, FL also were in a playoff, this one being a chip and putt playoff for third place. Colby made
quick work of it though, chipping in on his very first ball. Julian was unable to chip his in, and Colby was awarded third place and 800 points.
Men 13-15
In the Men 13-15 Division, Jalen Ledger of Palm Beach Gardens, FL impressed all in his first event on the tour. Ledger jumped out to the Round 1 lead after opening with a two over par round of
74. Ledger did not have much breathing room though, with August Cook of Clearwater, FL and Matthew Ruel of Oldsmar, FL just one behind at 75. Also there was one 76 and three 77’s.
However, Ledger stayed strong on Sunday, posting the tournament-low round of one under par 71. The 145 total gave Ledger a seven stroke victory after many competitors were unable to shoot a
low round on Sunday. One exception in the Division was Donald Wasoff of Safety Harbor, FL. Wasoff opened with an 80 and found himself far out of contention. But he showed real character by
fighting back into a second place finish after scoring an even par round of 72 on day two. Third place in the Division went to Cook, who finished with a 79 and a total of 154.
Amateur Men
In the Amateur Men’s Division, Patrick Fischer of Leesburg, FL grabbed his second victory in a row and his third of the year. Fischer played consistently, shooting rounds of 77 and 78 for a 155
total. Fischer is on top on the Amateur Men’s Points List by almost 4000 points now.
Amateur Women
Strong competition in the Amateur Women’s Division couldn’t keep Kelsey Gibson of Thonotosassa, FL from winning wire-to-wire. Gibson enjoyed a three stroke lead after day one by way of her
opening round of four over par 76. Three behind Gibson with a 79 was Brie Heinzler of Palm Harbor, FL. Stormy Staton of Southport, FL was in third place with an 81. All three competitors shot
lower on Sunday than they did on Saturday, a rare occurrence for this event. Staton finished strong with a 77 on day two, giving her a 158 total and third place honors. Heinzler posted a four over
par 76 on Sunday. Her 155 total earned her second place honors. But Gibson also went lower on Sunday, recording a three over par 75. Gibson’s 151 total gave her a four stroke victory and her
first victory in the Amateur Women’s Division.
Women 14-19
The Women’s 14-19 Division found Michelle Knoch of Longwood, FL earning her first career victory in the Division. Knoch stayed ahead of her competitor, Natasha Sol Cruz of Largo, FL, by
posting rounds of 90 and 99 for a 189 total. Knoch earned 1200 points for her victory. Sol Cruz, playing in her first Premier event, finished with the second place trophy. Sol Cruz scored 104-112-
216. She earned 1000 points for her second place finish.
Women 10-13
Winning for the third time in four 2011 events in the Women’s 10-13 Division was Samantha Brimhall of Rockledge, FL. An opening 83 gave Brimhall a small one stroke lead over Kelly Harris of
Land O Lakes, FL. Sunday proved to be a tough challenge for both competitors. Harris finished with a 97 and a third place finish at 181. Brimhall, however, emerged victorious after her second
round of 87 gave her a 170 total. Ashley Zagers of Oldsmar, FL almost snuck from behind and grabbed the victory. Zagers opened with a 91, but was able to shoot an 83 on Sunday, giving her a
174 total, just four strokes behind Brimhall. Brimhall commented, “Some things that I felt were at the top of my game this weekend was course management, driving off the tee, and staying
confident even when I hit a shot that I didn’t like.” With the victory and the subsequent 1200 points earned, Brimhall is now atop the 2011 Women 10-13 Points List.
Young Men 11-12
In the Young Men 11-12 Division, Connor Campbell of Belleair Bluffs, FL won for the first time in the 2011 season. Campbell played solidly and consistently, following an opening round of 79 up
with a round of 77 on day two. The 156 total gave Campbell a large victory and 1200 points. Campbell is now in the 6th position on the current Young Men 11-12 Points List. Runner up in the
Division went to Jackson Suber of Tampa, FL. Suber recorded scores of 89 and 90 for a 179 total. Suber is now 7th on the Points List. Third place in the Division went to first time 2011 competitor
on Premier, Matthew Perenich of Tarpon Springs, FL. Perenich shot 117-109-226 and was awarded the third place trophy and 800 points.
Boys 9-10
Tyler Wilkes of Tampa, FL continued his strong play in the Boys 9-10 Division this weekend at Countryside. Wilkes totaled just two over par for the tournament, shooting 74-72 for a 146 total. This
is Wilkes’ second victory of the season and he is now in a tie for second place on the current Boys 9-10 Points List. “I played good on a really tough golf course. But the best part of this weekend
was getting to see my buddy Demetri back in golf tournaments,” Wilkes commented. Demetri Kotsovolos of Clearwater, FL claimed second place in the Division, shooting rounds of 81 and 83 for
a total of 164. Kotsovolos earned 1000 points for his finish. Third place in the Division went to Mac Suber of Tampa, FL. Suber followed an opening round of 97 up with a 92 on Sunday, giving
himself a 189 total and third place honors.
Boys 6 & Under
In the Boys 6 & Under Division, Alex Ogle of St Petersburg, FL stretched his winning streak to now 5 events after his victory at Countryside. During the winning streak Ogle had totaled no more than
77, and this weekend was no exception. Ogle played very solid, opening with a one over par 37 and finishing on Sunday with an even par 36. Ogle earned 1200 points for the victory and is now
leading the Points List by over 5,000 points. Runner up in the Division was awarded to first time Premier competitor in 2011, Morgan Novak of Seffner, FL. Novak posted 58-67-125 and earned
1000 points for his finish.
