Tampa, FL - A challenging course coupled with difficult weather conditions were the story headlines the 2011 University of South Florida Junior Open. Premier Junior Tour visited The Claw Golf
Course at USF for its fourth event of the 2011 season. Premier also introduced caddies being allowed for all competitors in all Divisions for this event. This is the first of ten all-division caddy
events on the 2011 Schedule, where players in all Divisions will be allowed to have a caddy. We have been getting positive feedback from both players and caddies on the change, and we look
forward to many more caddy events this year.
Saturday's weather featured an overcast sky, as well as winds between 10-15mph and a consistent light rain all day long. The conditions softened the course considerably and the unrelenting
light rain proved to be a tough challenge for competitors to overcome. The players were out early on Sunday morning, contending with cooler conditions than Saturday and a softer breeze. The rain
stayed away for most of the day Sunday, although periodic light showers did remain.
Amateur Men
Starting things off in the Amateur Men's Division, we saw Ty O'Shields of Ocala, FL grab his first career victory on Premier. O'Shields opened with a solid round of 78 in Saturday's tough conditions.
A Sunday 85 gave him a 163 total and the victory. Fellow competitor Patrick Fischer of Leesburg, FL finished Runner Up in the Division. Fischer followed up a Round 1 of 91 with a 92 on Sunday
for a 183 total.
Men 16-19
In the Men 16-19 Division, Jimmy Stanger of Tampa, FL dominated, closing with a strong round on Sunday to secure his victory. Stanger jumped out to the Round 1 lead after posting a one over
par round of 72 on Saturday. One behind Stanger after day one was Dustin Dingus of Palm Harbor, FL. Anthony Maccaglia of Tampa, FL found himself five back of the round 1 lead after shooting
a 77. Stanger stayed strong on Sunday, matching his Saturday 72 with the same on Sunday. Stanger finished at two over par 144. Dingus fell to fourth place after an 81 on Sunday. However, the
fourth place finish added to his runner up finish at UF to give him the top spot on the 2011 Points Standings List. Maccaglia was the closest challenger to Stanger. Maccaglia posted a 75 on
Sunday to give him a 152 total. Third place in the Division went to Drew Cooke of Homosassa, FL. Cooke bettered his Saturday 79 with a 74 on Sunday. Stanger grabbed his first victory in the 2011
season impressively, winning by 8 shots.
